After a great deal of research, planning, and preparation, the Downtown Kenosha Inc. sponsored Facade Improvement Program is in full swing. In fact, the program’s first round of projects have been completed and a second round is underway. The program is available to all building and business owners located in the Kenosha Lakeshore Business Improvement District (BID). There are qualifications that need to be met and an application process followed by a detailed review by a committee. Despite the amount of planning and work to get the process started, numerous studies show the effort to be worthwhile as, almost universally, businesses see improvement to their overall revenue.

It's summer, and who wants to go to the gym (or down to the basement) and do a strength workout on a gorgeous day? With a bit of imagination, you can do most any gym exercise outside, using your own body weight. And as an added bonus, research has shown that compared with exercising indoors, exercising outdoors is associated with greater feelings of revitalization, decreases in tension, confusion, anger, and depression, and increased energy.

The 4th of July has a special kind of magic. I’ve most profoundly felt the spirit of community with those I share Kenosha with over the 4th. When you stand out on the street with thousands upon thousands as the parade goes by, it is hard not to feel a bubbling sense of pride and camaraderie with your fellow Kenoshans. All along the parade route from 60th Street through Library Square and through Downtown, you’ll see friends, neighbors, and family crowded to get the best look as the floats, bands, clowns, and local celebrities go by. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t know someone who marched in the parade in the Band of the Blackwatch, Kenosha’s own high school marching band. I myself marched in the parade with them in the 90’s! This year it’s supposed to be a hot one, so while you’re Downtown why not stop into one of the three ice cream parlors to grab a cool treat. You can take your choice from Scoops Ice Cream, Sandy’s Popper or Sugar Boxx.

With school ending, the endless possibilities of summer stretch before us. This can be an amazing feeling. It can also be a little intimidating if you don’t know where to look to fill the time. Luckily, there are lots of options in Downtown Kenosha that will make summer the amazing opportunity it can be.

Over the past 5 years, Kenosha County secured $1.4 billion of new and expanding industrial, capital investments including the announcement of 10,700 new jobs. By the next census, Kenosha is on track to be the third largest city in the state of Wisconsin, experiencing a growth rate of 12.5%, well above the national and state demographic trends. To complement industrial projects absorbed already and with added manufacturing commitments from Haribo and Foxconn coming, leaders from the community set out to spread this story to national and regional developers specializing in retail, residential and mixed use opportunities. Attending and being prepared for global retail conferences allows Kenosha County to reach developers that may not be familiar with the high level of investments being made in our market.

Recently a friend and I decided to visit the new Downtown restaurant Slip 56. I had heard quiet rumblings through my friends group that this place was an excellent addition to our Downtown. My first impression when I pulled up was how cheery it was with it’s red and turquoise outdoor seating area.

We love our children, more than life itself. But sometimes we need some time away. Why not make this Mother’s Day weekend one where you celebrate your partner as much as you celebrate your family? Find someone kind enough to take the kids Friday and Saturday night and get them early Sunday, refreshed and excited to be together. There’s no need to travel a couple of hours and stay in a hotel. Kenosha has as much, if not more, to do as popular destinations across the state. So forget your chores and errands, and spend a few days enjoying all there is to offer in your own backyard.

While there are many ways to stay active in Kenosha, (especially now that the weather is finally getting tolerable) in the late winter and early spring months, you’ll find many people preparing for the Wisconsin Marathon. The race - celebrating its 10th anniversary this year - is always held on the first Saturday of May. Whether you are a longtime runner, are preparing for your first race or are cheering on a loved one, the Wisconsin Marathon is a fantastic way to see the sights of Downtown Kenosha - all while burning calories! From the packet pickup at one of my favorite spots - the Kenosha Public Museum - to the start at Celebration Place in HarborPark, the marathon (as well as the 5K and half marathon) offers runners a taste of all that Downtown has to offer. (Plus, the thought of a double serving of Scoop’s ice cream after finishing does make me run faster)! We are fortunate to have so many spectators and volunteers participating in the marathon each year. The cheers, homemade signs and shouts of encouragement by people lining the downtown streets, along with volunteers staffing much-needed water stops, are such an important part of the race. They represent Kenosha so well.
