Delicious Danger Zone

I took several days off around the holidays to enjoy time with family. One of our outings included a visit to Trolley Dogs for lunch – one of our favorite downtown spots. While eating, “JZ” (John Ziemba, the manager at Captain Mike’s) walked in for his lunch break. He shared with me that the new Mike’s location – Mike’s Donuts & Chicken – would be opening for some trial run days before their Grand Opening in February.

JACKPOT! I had plans to make a family recipe for pasta sauce with my mom, aunt and sister on the first Saturday morning trial run. What goes better with making pasta sauce than donuts?!  So, I picked up a dozen of the most amazing looking (and smelling) pieces of fried dough I have ever seen on my way to my mother’s house. This off-the-wall shop did not disappoint.

My pink boxes included: three Bacon Praline Long Johns, two S’mores donuts, two Glazed Twists, one Strawberry Glazed Cyclopes, one Strawberry Glazed Cyclopes with nerds candy on top, one Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jelly donut, and two Boston Crème donuts.

The real gem, though, was he Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jelly donut. It is no secret that I am a giant six year old, and I enjoy a PBJ sandwich frequently. Now I will be in danger of having a PBJ Donut for breakfast every day since the new donut shop is across the street from my office! Just one more tempting culinary delight in the Downtown Kenosha neighborhood.

Since that glorious holiday weekend, there have been additional soft opening events. I am not ashamed to say that I have been back for most of them. They say you are what you eat, and I can think of a lot of worse things to be than a PBJ donut! This is an awesome addition to the dining landscape of our downtown community, so be sure to stop in - regular hours will begin February 12 - and declare which donut you want to turn into!
