Have you ever wondered about Kenosha's Downtown area? Have you heard about Second Saturday and always wanted to go see what it was about? As a long-time Kenosha resident and an employee at two downtown businesses, I can honestly tell you that I love Downtown Kenosha's Second Saturday events. I can easily take one day to run errands, pick up gifts and treats, and enjoy multiple meals and festivities, while hanging out and enjoying local shops, restaurants, venues and artisans; not to mention the awesome Second Saturday exclusive savings being offered! The next chance to check out Second Saturday is just a few days away, so let me share some of my favorites on the lineup.
Ever gone crazy trying to find a perfect gift for someone? Or perhaps you need a unique custom piece of furniture to finish off a room, one that won't break your budget? Lulu Birds is great for BOTH! Plus they just moved and have nearly tripled their store’s square-footage. That means more neat stuff for you and I to explore! They feature many unique arts & craft pieces, jewelry, signs, and novelty items (many with Wisconsin themes), all of which are hand crafted or refurbished by local artisans. They also offer an assortment of one-of-a-kind furniture pieces that are bound to impress anyone and add those finishing touches to any room in your home (I have a few myself!).
After you spend an hour or so shopping at Lulu Birds (trust me, you’ll enjoy every minute of it) you can conveniently stroll next door to PUBLIC Craft Brewing Co. They just tapped a new Belgium Dark Strong Ale (12.2% abv) that is amazingly smooth and just as potent! On this upcoming Second Saturday, they will be releasing their Sweet Colleen's Irish Red in anticipation of upcoming St. Patrick's Day festivities. There are no TVs at this brewery, but you can enjoy shuffleboard, an over-sized Jenga game, or even color your own coaster.
Perhaps you will have the family with you this weekend? Have no fear! Head over to another newly expanded business, Robin's Nest Cakery & Cafe! The special for this Second Saturday is fresh-made pizza slices and a soda, perfect for lunch or an afternoon snack. Also don't forget to pick up a cupcake, or six. Robin is famous for her ever-changing variety of flavors that include classics like vanilla and chocolate, but range to the exotic like Coconut Lime Basil, Raspberry Fudge, and Banana Toffee. Take a variety pack home and figure out what your favorite flavor is!
Don't think Second Saturday is just for the daytime or little kids! Downtown Kenosha has a pretty great nightlife scene awaiting you, too! Did you know that Mangia Wine Bar has some seriously great Happy Hour specials in their lounge area from 4 – 7 p.m.? Take advantage of half-priced wood-fried artesian pizzas (my favorite is the Salsiccia with their homemade Fennel Sausage), $5.00 Stemmari house wines, and other delicious specials and deals. A recent "Girls' Night Out" turned into a 3-hour dining adventure for myself and a girlfriend. We explored the menu by sharing a variety of different small plates, pizza, and a pasta. The evening ended with a sinfully delicious Tiramisu that should be on everyone's must-taste list!
Maybe you’re not looking for a full-course meal but just some good entertainment? Stop by Ashling on the Lough and hear a local siren “Lavonne: Solo & Sass & Nothing But Crass.” A recent transplant from the Des Moines area, Lavonne performs covers ranging from rock, soul/blues, pop, and even some Disney classics – she also has some original songs, too. She is definitely a new gem to the Kenosha music scene not to be missed! Lyrical enchantment starts at 7:30 p.m. at Ashling and goes until 10:30 p.m. You can also check out entertainment at Sazzy B, Kenosha Fusion and more!
